Canadian pianist Tong Wang presents Skye, an evocative new solo piano recording devoted entirely to music by living Canadian composers. Released on August 21, 2026 on CD-R and all major digital streaming platforms, the album brings together five distinctive voices—Roydon Tse, Wesley Chu, Matthias McIntire, Delong Wang, and Alice Ping Yee Ho—in a programme that explores memory, landscape, imagination, and the search for belonging.

Skye unfolds as a unified artistic statement, with repertoire that has emerged through years of creative collaboration and friendship between Wang and the composers and each work reflecting conversations across performances, commissions, and shared artistic communities. 

The album's title is both deeply personal and quietly symbolic. Beginning as the childhood nickname “Sky” before evolving into Wang's artistic identity "Skye”—the name has accompanied her through changing seasons of life, from adolescence and fantasy worlds to reconnecting with her Chinese heritage and establishing herself as one of Canada's compelling advocates for new music. Beneath this ever-changing sky lies the central idea of the recording: although our lives continually transform, certain truths endure.

That idea finds resonance throughout the programme. Roydon Tse's Wild Skies captures the immense horizons of the Canadian Prairies in music of elemental sweep and luminous stillness. Wesley Chu's Flower Club Suite transforms themes from a long-developed fantasy universe into a virtuosic narrative for solo piano. Matthias McIntire's Nocturne reflects on dreaming, consciousness, and the unsettling implications of artificial intelligence through an expansive contemporary nocturne. Delong Wang's Portrait of the Astor Chinese Garden Court offers a miniature of exquisite restraint, inspired by the subtle transformations and playful beauty of classical Chinese gardens. Alice Ping Yee Ho's A Manic Ride Through Lollipop Hell closes the album with dazzling virtuosity, drawing together theatrical imagination and emotional vulnerability in a work exploring friendship, courage, and compassion.

Although each composer speaks in a distinctive musical language, Skye reveals surprising connections between their voices. Nature, storytelling, dreams, mythology, technology, Chinese cultural heritage, and the vast Canadian landscape all emerge as recurring threads, creating a programme that feels less like a collection of individual works than a carefully shaped musical journey.

Recorded in the University of Lethbridge Recital Hall on the celebrated Steinway Model D concert grand "Clara," the album was produced by Alex Bohn of Canadian Classical Records. The recording was made possible through the support of the Hnatyshyn Foundation, Calgary Arts Development, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Canadian Music Centre, reflecting a shared commitment to championing Canadian creators and expanding the contemporary piano repertoire.

At once intimate and expansive, Skye positions Tong Wang not only as an exceptional interpreter of contemporary music, but as a thoughtful curator of Canada's living musical landscape. The recording invites listeners to encounter new works not as isolated premieres, but as chapters in an ongoing conversation about identity, imagination, and home.
